As President of the Kentucky Association I would like to invite you to become a member of the premier Track and Field Organization in the United States. USATF, USA Track and Field, was founded in 1979 as an organization for the training and promotion of Track and Field Athletes. The mission of USATF is to provide vision and leadership to the sport of Athletics in the United States, and to promote the pursuit of excellence from youth to masters, from grass roots to Olympic Games. This is done through a series of programs, by establishing grass roots programs, developing Athletes, providing Coaches Education, establishing and enforcing rules and regulations, sanctioning events, providing insurance, and certifying race coerces and validating records.

We encourage the training, development, and competition of all athletes to help create the future stars who will follow in the footsteps of Maurice Green, Marion Jones, Michael Johnson, Regina Godina, Curt Jacobs or Stacy Dragila. This includes developing, selecting and leading Team USA – The  World’s #1 Team – at the Olympics, World Championships and more than 12 international events. Roughly 700 athletes of all ages wear Team USA uniforms each year. Doing this means a requirement for coaches and officials.

The Coaching Education Committee of USA Track & Field provides ongoing educational opportunities for all levels of coaches-from the grassroots to the elite level. Its mission is to incorporate the latest research produced by the Sports Science and Medicine Committee, as well as independent research sources, into understandable curricula. Educational materials, coaching schools, journals, audio-visual productions and resource materials are available through a 3 level coach training program. One of the premiere training programs for the pole vault.

USATF has taken a zero tolerance approach to drugs. This includes a substantially increased set of punishments and fines for athletes who cheat and their coaches. This could include lifetime bans for first steroid offenses and fines up to $100,000 for steroid convictions, to ensure there is no question for where USATF stands on drugs and doping athletes.

Any track meet needs to have people to officiate. Fair and impartial competition is imperative for the student athlete to learn good sportsmanship. USATF is the primer organization for training, certifying and providing Officials for AAU, NCAA, NAIA, and The Olympic Games. Other training program for officials is the NFHS program which provides KHSAA Local Officials and many KHSAA Officials continue their education and become USATF Officials to officiate the National Level Competitions.

Now what does it cost? Your membership fee is $20.00. The first $3.00 is retained to run the local association, the next $6.00 is returned to the association for insurance, the next $8.00 supports the elite athlete program and National and International Competition. The remaining $3.00 pays for the Headquarters Staff in Indianapolis. As you can see the vast majority of the funding is returned to the Local Association, and the Athlete.

USATF provides numerous advantages to the Track and Field Athlete, Coach, Athletic Directors and School Administrators. Ensuring that your Coaching Staff is thoroughly trained and certified is as important as having the insurance to cover the unforeseen accident. If the United States is going to continue the World Leadership in Track and Field we need to continue to fill the pipeline with the best Trained, Coached and Supported Athletes. I am ready to help in any way possible. Take advantage of this great wealth of knowledge by joining USATF.

                                                                              Sincerely

                                                                              James L. McKee Sr.
